Shipping Manager

Your skills include the technology expertise to ship 400 orders/day to customers and 16 branches around the world, including far flung areas such as Malaysia & Kuwait. Leading a shipping department of sixteen employees and contractors, you will manage the day-to-day shipping operations as you motivate a culturally diverse team (some of whom do not speak any English) to meet and exceed their quality and productivity targets. You will serve as a liaison between our Manufacturing, Sales, Accounting departments and our global customer base as you drive the optimum balance between service and cost and ensure quality of service by contract carriers to consistently meet our customers' delivery expectations. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will bring the hands-on shipping expertise, but you will also showcase your multitasking prowess as you efficiently juggle a lot of balls in the air and head off problems with your forward-thinking savvy before they become shipping nightmares.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering/Transportation/Business/Finance or equivalent combination of education & experience.
- 3-5 years of hands-on experience in a shipping, manufacturing or warehouse environment, including:
- Direct supervisory experience.
- Freight carrier interaction experience with demonstrated success applying strong communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
- Knowledge of domestic and international shipping processes.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- A professional attitude and demeanor.
- The ability to work in a dynamic environment, adhere to timelines, and handle stress.
- The ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Computer proficiency in a Microsoft Office suite environment.
Preferred, but not required:
- Background in a high volume, manual shipping environment is a plus.
- Bilingual in English & Spanish.

More About Your Role
Reporting directly to the Plant Manager, you'll direct your efforts toward motivating your team of sixteen personnel to high performance and ensure that we consistently hit our delivery goals.
Coming aboard, you will aim to quickly develop an understanding of our complex shipping environment--including a comprehensive knowledge of our products, understanding which products are fragile and learning about our vendors as well as the nuances of international shipping regulations--so that you can begin making a real impact.
At a high level, you will ideally spend about 60% of your time on the floor managing the day-to-day shipping operations and allocating resources; and the remaining 40% with process improvements and administrative responsibilities. Specifically, your responsibilities encompass the following key areas:
Customer Focus
- Ensure on-time delivery to customers; confer with other supervisors to coordinate activities.
- Establish/adjust work procedures to meet customer seasonality & schedules.
- Work with Sales on Ship via methods to balance customer satisfaction and cost.
- Work with common carriers to ensure smooth scheduling and service and confirm deliveries.
- Understand, maintain and communicate the procedures for domestic and international shipping to shipping staff.
- Evaluate and recommends packing changes to minimize damage and shipping cost.
Leadership
- Drive recruitment, training, retention and performance of shipping personnel.
- Analyze and resolve work problems, or assist workers in solving work problems.
- Initiate or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
- Manage time keeping system and monitor employee dependability.
- Oversee departmental safety issues.
- Conduct root cause analysis of errors/mistakes and find solutions to prevent similar errors/mistakes.
- Train and evaluate subordinates in job performance, quality and safety; recommend steps to optimize their performance and their personal and professional growth.
- Implement company policies, procedures and manufacturing strategy.
- Enforce EEO/ADA/AAP Sexual Harassment policies and procedures.
Cost Focus
- Manage departmental costs and approve budgets for training, equipment and supplies.
- Recommend changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shipping department.
- Monitor/audit carrier charges.
- Follow Trimas' recommend transportation list and/or find best shipping company to ensure cost/service balance.
- Maintain equipment and determine what repair/replacement is necessary.
- Control stock levels, reuse, and recycle of supplies i.e. pallets, cardboard.
